It's Really Not Okay
It's Really Not Okay
Every 98 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted. Every year over 80,000 prisoners, 60,000 children, 18,000 members of the military and 321,000 adults in the general population are subjected to sexual violence. That's almost a half million people and that doesn't include the 2 out 3 sexual assaults that are estimated to go unreported. On average, 9 out of 10 sexual assaults are committed against women and one out of six women experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. 21% of the transgender, genderqueer and nonconforming gender population experience sexual assault in their lifetime. A 1998 study reported that at that time 17.7 million American women and 2.78 million American men had been raped. This is way, way, way too many people. One is too many.
Right now we have a president select who makes casual comments about grabbing women by the pussy. This is totally unacceptable. I cannot imagine a situation where this would be acceptable. Sexual violence is a real problem in the United States and that's really not okay. I chose to weave this rug in grey and white. Grey because so often we hear that sexual assaults fall into a grey are, which is bullshit, the absence of a no isn't a yes. And white to represent the silence of the millions who are to afraid, ashamed or don't even know how to speak up about how they have been violated. 10% of the proceeds from this rug are going to RAINN who created the National Sexual Assault Hotline, carries out programs to prevent sexual violence, help victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice
This weaving is part of my collection, Warp of Dissent, which was woven in response to the egregious actions taken by our current government.
It's Really Not Okay was hand woven in Portland, OR on my Rio Grande walking loom from about 100% wool yarn on a wool warp. It measures 29.5 x 51 inches or ~57 in. with fringe.
